Well, there’s just no way to explain the feeling of Victory, but once enjoyed – never forgotten, so I look fwd to doing this again many times in 2009... Now if only MKSC could win a best club turnout trophy – Dreams can become trophys!!!
The MKSC entourage for the Southern Discomfort III arrived in B’ham Friday afternoon at 4pm, & quickly headed for Magic City Scooters, Matt, Joy & the gang, & the PBR awaiting us... Art, Billy, Bob & James... It was on, & many beers later, we all headed for the Bottle Tree, more PBR, & 3 bands I never really heard... The beer flowed heavily, & the whisky shots were doing their job... Shortly after the witching hour, we all headed to the Upside Down bar in the basement of the Highland (great place & new rooms are very NYC-Art Deco), where more PBR was consumed & some billiards & it then gets blurry... There was some 3am eating involved at a hole-in-the-wall in 5-points, I think I had a cheeseburger...
I came to Sat morning about 9am & my head was pounding, so shite-shower-shave & off to Urban Std for some b’fast, then coke, then Yoo-hoo’s, but I just couldn’t kick the hangover or my pounding headache... On top of this, while riding to Barber, my scoot started sputtering & back-firing, & generally running like crap, much to the enjoyment of many fellow scooterists who’ve heard my story too many times about never having to do anything to my scoot since importing (except some chrome) 6 yrs ago...
Anyhow, I pretty much knew what the problem was likely to be since I short-cut a minor repair on Thurs eve before departing for So Disco... After viewing the Barber Museum for a bit, & letting the GTR cool down, I pulled out my tools & started fixing the failed short-cut repair... The coil had vibrated loose, & after about 30 mins of work, restoring a solid ground to the coil, things were back to normal & we were headed to Sloss Foundry, site of BBQ & Gymkhana/Slow race...
The Gymkhana was a different style than usual, mostly natural, er, existing obstacles, but included a 50 meter high-speed section on a slag-gravel road, plus no penalties for dabbing, this was gonna be all about fastest time... More importantly, the beer began to flow, & soon all hangover symptoms were a thing of the past... We started on railroad tracks, very bumpy as cross-ties were rotted out & left some major whoopty-doos between the tracks, then jump off 1-rail that had back-filled w/ dirt... You were immediately on the slag-gravel road for 50 meters, hitting 3rd gear & near 35+ mph, all the time trying to keep everything upright as the scooter moved all around beneath you... The slag-gravel was more roundish stones & seemed more like riding on imperfect marbles & BB’s... Then into a figure 8 barrel turn, some cones & then back onto the slag-gravel road & hangin’ on to stay upright at hi-speed again, often a bit sideways... The final obstacle was the see-saw jump, which most of us were hitting about 15-25mph & it was really nothing at that speed, just a little air time... I’ve never been so loose on my scoot in gravel & everyone was a little freaked at how loose we were at speed, but Matt of Monkey Knife Fight S/C, who started 1st, ended up being the winner... I had a little problem in the whoopty-doos, almost killing the engine, but managed to finish 3rd fastest, w/ brit’ Anna of Terminal S/C just ahead of me on her ‘70 GTR, almost identical to mine...
Next up was the Slow Race, 25 meters in the grass, & I must’ve finally stumbled upon the right tire pressure for the slow race, winning my pre-lim’ by half the course distance... The final saw 3 of us going head-to-head, Matt of MKFSC, Will fr: BSS, & moi... I’ve got to remember the tire pressures used because I won easily, almost too easy, & I could’ve watched the Simpsons while traveling those 25 yds...
Then it was time for the Awards Party!!! James Ledbetter who joined the club Monday, & then attended his 1st rally this weekend, completing his club initiation & confirming him as a ranked MKSC member, picked up the Best Twist-n-Go trophy w/ his Vespa GTS250 – too Clean!!!
Art picked up 2 trophy’s at this year’s So Disco, Furthest Ridden – for riding his scoot 261 miles to B’ham... But then, he also picked up the Most Problematic Scooter trophy after his GT coil died about 3am Sat morning... Granted, he didn’t ride the 261 miles back, but instead joined Bob & I in the Trooper Sun afternoon, while Matt is going to make the needed repairs to Art’s scoot... Note that while some might think why did his coil go out, remember Art puts more miles on his scoot every year than all the rest of us added together...
And of course, I picked up the Slow Race trophy... All trophy’s were made by BSS members, very Cool & Artsy, incorporating the So Disco logo, so my special helmet for the Slow Ride win is a piece of art – No, not that Art... But if you’re interested, come on down to the Saucer this eve & take a gander at my artsy, PBR enhanced, slow riding tool – this should help me win more Slow Races in the future...
It may not be 1st Monday, but come on down & share the thrill of victory as we’ll have a trophy or 2 to show off while we enjoy a Stella, or Pilsner Urquell, anything but a PBR!!!
As it turns out, looks as if MKSC will put on a Rally next year, no choice, ‘cuz as Stan of Hill City United S/C stated, he needs a new STAX t-shirt... Stan attended both Dead Elvis Scooter Rallys, 2004-2005, driving fr: Chattanooga, & there are many awaiting our rally announcement... Planning must begin, & every Member’s assistance will be needed & utilized, so please attend upcoming MKSC services & let’s get this right – TCB!!!
Keep the rubber side down, & someone tell me how I got these skin’t elbows...
